Projects

Here are some past and current projects along with my role on the project.

Aletheia - decentralized network for open access publishing

In 2018, a friend and I started a very ambitious decentralised app project, the project was in response to the ineficient academic publishing process that puts research behind paywalls. Our solution was a decentralised app based on the Ethereum blockchain which would facilitate and incentivise publishing and reviewing.

We made progress and built excitement, I was the lead developer but we had several volunteers around the world, a highlight was when web inventor Tim Berners-Lee joined our slack channel to ask some questions about the technology. We were also discussing a trial project with the University of Waikato.

Unfortunately technology was our downfall, and with the state of blockchain and distributed storage technology in 2018, I lost faith in being able to build a DAPP that was fit for purpose. Perhaps the project is worth another look in the future, it is still a worthy goal!

TherapyBoard - App for connecting multi-disciplinary therapy teams

I'm currently working on an app for my fiancée who's an occupational therapist. In her field, several independent therapists may be working with a single child, however they rarely coordinate. TherapyBoard is an app that will help multi-disciplinary teams communicate securely and conveniently. I'm starting with an iPhone app and will add Android and Web later if the MVP is promising.

Automattic - Wordpress.com

Wordpress is the publishing technology that powers over 30% of the web. Automattic is the company behind wordpress, and wordpress.com is their main revenue generating product. I was with Automattic for 4 years as a Senior Engineer, over that time I focused on new user onboarding and reader engagement.

Taking the wordpress.com reader public

wordpress.com has a feed of blog posts from across the platform. But it was only available for people who already have a wordpress.com site. What a waste!

I pushed to get the reader to be made public, to do that we had to improve the design, improve the moderation and get it to generate more useful recommendations. After over a year of improvements by quite a few developers, the reader is now an elegant and engaging public product that brings out some of the best blogs on wordpress.com.

ThoughtWorks

ThoughtWorks is a leading global software consultancy, known for their extremely tough recruitment process. I was a Senior Software Engineer with ThoughtWorks for 5 years working mostly for Brisbane based clients. At the time I joined, ThoughtWorks was rated as having a tougher interview than Microsoft, Facebook or Google.

Dominos - dominos.com.au & Pizza Mogul

It may not seem glamorous, but dominos.com.au is Australia's leading just in time manufacturing ecommerce operation with over 3M visitors per month. Dominos was also responsible for ambitious tech projects such as Pizza Mogul, an app and social network where users could design their own pizza and sell it for a share of the profit.

I was with Dominos for two years, I worked across their ecommerce products including dominos.com.au, pizza chef, SMS ordering, and Pizza Mogul.
